🛑 “Pause all AI Now!” - An open letter from AI experts.
Proceed with caution: Recently, over 1,000 AI and tech leaders signed an open letter calling for a pause in the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.
The letter argues that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence pose profound risks to society and humanity, and that powerful AI systems should only be developed once their effects are positive and their risks are manageable.
Key Takeaways:
The letter argues that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence pose profound risks to society and humanity.
Powerful AI systems should only be developed once their effects are positive and their risks are manageable.
AI labs and independent experts should use the pause to develop shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development, audited by independent outside experts.
Robust AI governance systems are needed, including new regulatory authorities dedicated to AI and liability for AI-caused harm.
So far 1769 signatures have been added. However, the letter has faced criticism as there is no verification process in place for signatories. Yann LeCun from Meta has denied signing the letter and strongly disagrees with its premise.
After reading the letter, I tend to agree, we are moving too fast, might be a good idea to take a breather. What do you think?
AI-generated models.

Levi Strauss has teamed up with AI company Lalaland.ai to create "tailored AI-generated models" for its denim products, in an effort to promote sustainability and diversity among its models.
However, critics have argued that the move is a poor substitute for actually hiring more diverse models, and that it is ironic for a company that claims to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion to use AI-generated models that do not reflect real people.
Some have also criticized the move in light of the company's recent layoffs, which saved the company $100 million. Critics argue that the company should invest in real diversity rather than "fake diversity" generated by AI. Creative workers' rights advocate Thom Binding said
"Levi’s using AI to generate 'more diverse models' instead of, you know, actually hiring more diverse models is exactly the kind of crap you’d expect from this industry,"

🍲 How AI is Solving Food Waste
The grocery industry faces a major waste problem: 31% of food at retail and consumer levels is lost. Hungryroot is here to solve that problem.

Hungryroot is an online grocery and recipe delivery service that uses AI to reduce food waste and personalize the customer experience. The company's AI-powered platform fills customers' carts with grocery and recipe recommendations based on their food preferences, dietary goals, and family size. As customers edit their carts, the AI learns and becomes better with each visit.
Hungryroot also helps customers reduce their food waste footprint by recommending healthy groceries framed in recipes that show them how to make use of every ingredient they get. The company's AI allows it to have dramatically less waste not just at the consumers' homes but at its warehouses too, with one of the lowest food waste percentages in the industry at 2% [1]
Ben McKean, CEO & founder said:
“Since our AI knows about our customers' needs, preferences, and goals, we’re able to recommend healthy groceries framed in recipes that show them how to make use of every ingredient they get. With recipe support catered to households of all sizes, we’re reducing the chance that customers are left with half-bags of spinach that go to waste instead of being fully utilized. One of our customers even reported they’ve “only discarded one small potato, a stalk of asparagus, and two pieces of shaved brussels sprouts in the past year using Hungryroot.”

AI + Agriculture = smarter, sustainable farming”

With the world's population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the pressure on the food industry to keep up with the growing demand is immense. AI is helping to increase yields, reduce waste, and improve the quality and safety of our food supply.
Precision farming is one of the most exciting ways AI is being used in agriculture, allowing farmers to optimize crop yields and reduce waste. AI is also being used to improve food safety, and nutritional value, and to address the issue of food waste.
The role of AI in the food industry is only going to become more important, and the benefits of this technology will be felt by everyone, from farmers to consumers.
The availability of affordable internet-connected sensors enables farmers to capture and track operational data, whether it’s from the soil, equipment or livestock. That data can then help generate insights to apply precision agriculture or predictions farmers can use as they look to improve yields while conserving precious resources, including water.
Using AI technology such as Project FarmVibes.AI, it is possible to predict and plot the ideal amounts of fertilizer and herbicide required based on the level of soil nutrients, forecast temperatures and wind speeds across their fields, determine the ideal depth to plant seeds or irrigation needs based on soil moisture, and guide how different crops and practices can keep carbon sequestered in the soil.
Key Takeaways:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the agriculture and food production industry, transforming the way farmers and food producers operate.
AI is being used in precision agriculture to monitor crop moisture, soil composition, and temperature, enabling farmers to increase their yields by learning how to take care of their crops and determine the best time to harvest them
Robots are being used in the food industry to manipulate and produce various highly commercialized products, such as soft drinks, milk, and their derivatives
AI is being used to sort food, which can help reduce food waste and improve food safety
AI has the potential to provide key solutions to healthcare problems, saving millions of lives

📉 Advanced AI: A Blessing or a Curse for 300 Million Workers?
Goldman Sachs has released a report stating that generative AI has the potential to lose 300 million full-time jobs to automation. 😬 BUT, don't go pressing the panic button just yet! The report points out that while automation can lead to some job losses, history has shown that new opportunities tend to emerge as well.
Key Insights:
With generative AI reaching half of employers, 7% of workers risk losing their jobs entirely within a decade.
AI has the potential to automate 18% of the global workforce, boosting annual global GDP by 7% over 10 years.
Administrative and legal jobs are particularly at risk, with AI capable of substituting 46% and 44% of these roles, respectively.

The impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, but most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than substituted by AI

Learn how to use a “Rolling Budget” with Hubspot. What is a rolling budget you ask?
A rolling budget is like a plan that helps you know how much money you have and how much you can spend. It is a budget that is updated every month or every few months, so you always have an idea of how much money you can use. It's like a game where you plan how to use your allowance, and as you spend it, you update your plan so you know how much you still have left to spend.

🎶 AI's Musical Revolution: The Future of Sound
In an article put out by Complex, they spoke to artists, AI experts, and music industry professionals to find out how artificial intelligence could impact music in the coming years.it discusses how creative AI could be the most disruptive technology for the music business since the Napster era of piracy.
Over 10 different music AI models have been released by independent researchers and big-tech companies like Google and ByteDance, allowing users to generate custom tracks in seconds using a mere text prompt. Thanks to off-the-shelf music AI tools like Boomy, hundreds of thousands of AI-generated songs are now listed on streaming services.

Generative AI tools for text and visual art like ChatGPT and Midjourney have picked up tens of millions of users, forcing us to rethink traditional notions of creativity, ownership, and attribution. The friction between having an idea and manifesting that idea in the form of creative work has essentially gone down to zero. Traditional music-industry notions of authorship and attribution will likely need to be thrown out the window with creative AI. The legal and regulatory landscape around generative AI is still so unpredictable that trying to make any future predictions right now is a futile effort.
The best music AI developers are building iterative feedback and collaboration cycles with artists into their day-to-day workflows. Novel approaches to licensing, monetization, and brand protection that are being experimented with right now with AI models prioritize direct artist consent and collaboration with developers as an ethical default (e.g., Spawning). Generative AI is coming for music, whether we like it or not.
Here are a few areas of impact:
there will be a flood of mediocre, indistinguishable, unoriginal music
music libraries and production houses will see the most change
we may see a paradox movement back to an artist and originality focus for listener habits
artists who most effectively use AI as part of their creative stack will ride a new wave.
The takeaway is to learn and adapt. Know who you are. The era of ‘creating for the algorithm’ may come to an end. How can you beat an advanced AI at that?
